Olive oil

One of the few dietary fats with a real randomised trial behind it.

Promising but early

PREDIMED randomised thousands of people to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil and found fewer cardiovascular events, which is rare in nutrition research. The trial was retracted and republished after randomisation problems were found at some sites, and the reanalysis held. Olive oil was also one part of a whole dietary pattern, so attributing the effect to the oil alone goes further than the data does.

How this list was built

We searched Europe PMC for English-language papers published since 2010 whose title contains “olive oil”, kept meta-analyses, systematic reviews, trials and observational studies, because a diet or exposure like this cannot be randomised for long and its outcome evidence lives in cohorts, then ranked them by study design first, then recency and citations. Retracted papers are removed.

Open a paper to read its abstract and ask for an AI brief of what it found.
